Weber County’s Pearl Harbor Hero

I can’t let this momentous day go by without paying tribute to our local hero, Ensign Howard Deal Merrill.  He was aboard the USS Arizona when it was attacked by the Japanese.   He was born in Provo, the son of Dr. Leslie and Eliza Deal Merrill.  The family later moved to Ogden and resided at 2761 Harrison Blvd.   A graduate of Annapolis, he was assigned to the Arizona.

He was Weber County’s first casualty of World War II. His remains are part of the 900+ that  were never recovered from the Arizona.  He has a memorial marker in the Aultorest Cemetery in Ogden.
